Yunus Centre Press Release (March 07, 2019)
Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus visited the Campuses of three Universities in France, and one University in Switzerland to address their students. French Universities are Montpellier School of Business, in Montpellier, and Lyon Business School in Lyon, and Dijon Burgundy School of Business, Dijon, all in the South of France. Swiss University was Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), of Lausane in Switzerland. This tour of universities was organized by Yunus Centre Paris with the support of YY Foundation, and took place from 4th to 6th March 2019.
The YY campus tour, as it is called, aims to promote the concept of social business among the young people at the invitation of the universities. There were two complementary events which took place at each campus, a speech from Professor Yunus and a Panel Discussion and a workshop. The purpose is to first have a discussion and raise awareness on the topic of Social Business among students and local social businesses and then to deepen their understanding through the workshop.
In Switzerland Professor Yunus gave a lecture to the students of Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Two thousand newly enrolled students attended the lecture. EPFL is a prestigious university in Europe which specialises in fields of Science, Engineering and Technology and established the first Yunus Social Business Centre (YSBC) in Switzerland. The YSBC, a collaboration between the EPFL University and Yunus Centre aims to find ways to use technology in order to create social impact.
As a part of the trip to Lausanne, Professor Yunus also had a meeting with the President of International Olympic Committee (IOC) Mr. Thomas Bach. He invited Professor Yunus to have a discussion to review the sports related social business programmes launched jointly by Yunus Social Hub in Paris and IOC. Mr. Bach took an interest in the the new Social Business Volunteer programme of Yunus Centre and expressed that employees of big corporations should be encouraged to become social business volunteers.
In his speeches Professor Yunus reminded the young people about danger of artificial intelligence, wealth concentration, and environmental threat. He urged the audience to create a world of three zeros --- zero poverty, zero unemployment, and zero net carbon emission.
